Mr. Ruffing

Purpose:  This course offers the advanced third or fourth year math student a refresher course in Algebra II, Trigonometry, and Analytical Geometry and a basic understanding of the principles of Calculus. It is primarily designed as an extremely broad background for the student entering a college level Calculus course in the next year.

Objectives:

At the completion of this course the student will be able to:

  1. Apply Analytical Geometry in appropriate situations;
  2. Use the basic techniques of differentiation and integration in solving problems involving two variables;
  3. Apply differentiation and integration in the solution of certain problems.

Course Outline:

  1. Algebra II review
  2. Trigonometry review
  3. Exponentials & Logs
  4. Limits & Derivatives
  1. Differentiation Rules

  2. Applications of Differentiation

  3. Integrals

  4. Applications of Integration

Class Procedures:  The major activities of the class will be lecture and student participation through problem solving (notes and HW).  Homework problems will be assigned practically on a daily basis and students are encouraged to ask questions about those problems that were difficult for them to complete or master.

Grading:  The quarter grade will be determined as follows:

Homework (10%):
  • check for completed work - not correct answers
  • MUST show work along with answer
  • NO late assignments

Quizzes (30%):
  • given regularly and typically unannounced
  • usually 20 points
  • a quiz that is missed must be made-up the next day

Tests (60%):
  • approximately every three weeks
  • announced and cumulative
  • usually 100 points
  • a test that is missed must be made-up the next day; if it is not made-up within one week of returning; a grade equivalent to one-half of the lowest test grade for the quarter will be assigned

Grade Calculation:
  • test average     x  60  =  A
  • quiz average    x  30  =   B
  • HW average    x  10  =  C
  • QUARTER GRADE = A + B + C

       * a final grade of 0.5% or greater will be raised

Materials Needed: The textbook, pencil, calculator, and notebook - EVERYDAY!
A TI-83 graphing calculator may be rented for $5 to use all year. Batteries will not be supplied.
