There is a substitution list in the faculty room for the teachers to sign up to sub for teachers who are helping with the Kairos retreat this week. This is a good way to do penance for the Lenten season as Easter approaches. Thank you, and remember that this is a first come, first served opportunity. |

In true Elder Altiora spirit, the Elder Library is having a contest this year to celebrate Teen Reading but not just for a week---our contest is going to take place over a period of 6 months from Teen Read Week (Oct. 18-24 2009) to Teen Literature Day (April 15, 2010)! The purpose of the contest is to encourage students to read books beyond course assignments.
For each book read, a contestant will need to fill out an entry form (available in the school library) with the title/author and brief information about the book. For each approved entry form (approval determined by Mrs. Ploehs or Mrs. Kelley), a contestant will receive a valuable raffle ticket that will give him an opportunity to win a Grand Prize Package of gift cards/certificates to various food and retail establishments (a retail value of at least $100!). This raffle drawing will take place on Teen Literature Day in April. Of course, the Super Grand Prize will be the knowledge and pleasure gained from reading for fun!
Also, each month of the contest, there will be an announcement regarding Bonus Books. Contestants who read and submit an entry form for a book denoted as a Bonus Book during that month will receive an additional bonus entry into the raffle contest – “2 for the price of 1!” For example, during the month from Feb. 16th through Mar. 12th, the Bonus Books will be any book from the Historical Fiction genres - anyone who reads and submits an approved entry form for a Biography or Non-fiction book by Feb. 16th will receive 2 raffle tickets for the BIG prize drawing on Thurs. April 15th.
And, as an added incentive, any contestant who reads and submits an approved entry form anytime during the 6 month contest period for a book that was on the list of Favorite Books of Elder Staff from last year’s Teen Literature Day Contest will receive 3 raffle tickets! (This list is available in the Elder Library.)

It is important for our community to be aware and take preventive measures in dealing with the spread of the Swine Flu ( H1N1) virus.
The flu, also known as influenza, is a contagious respiratory
disease caused by influenza viruses. In the United States,
flu season begins every fall and ends every spring. The flu
people get during this season is called seasonal flu.
Presently a new type of flu virus ( H1N1) has emerged to which
people have no resistance. When this happens, it can
spread more easily from person to person around the
world in a very short time. This is pandemic flu. Illness with the new H1N1 virus has ranged from mild to severe. While most people who have been sick have recovered without needing medical treatment, hospitalizations and deaths from infection with this virus have occurred.
Please refer to the following website from the Centers For Disease Control for frequent updates on the H1N1 Swine Flu.
The information from the American Red Cross on Family Preparedness and Home Care for the Pandemic Flu is also very helpful.
Any questions or concerns, feel free to contact your family physician or contact the school nurse, Linda M. Giessler RN at # 513- 921-3744 ext 3109
